Liposomes are small, artificial and lipid-based bilayered spherical vesicles, which are created spontaneously by hydrated phospholipids. The research activity related to liposomes is growing at a substantial pace in order to investigate their potential across various therapeutic applications, including disease diagnostics and targeted drug delivery. As a result, there has been a significant increase in the number of scientific articles published in this domain.



There has been a continuous increase in the number of articles published in this domain, during the given time period. This can be attributed to the extensive research being carried out to investigate the global status, trends, and therapeutic potential of liposomes. It is worth highlighting that in 2021, 1,208 articles related to liposomes were published. This number is expected to rise in 2022, as till July, more than 800 articles have already been published.



Further, majority of the articles (51%) are focused on evaluating liposomes for use in cancer therapy. This can be attributed to the fact that liposomes can actively target tumor tissues when used in combination with antibodies. This is followed by articles focused on the applications of liposomes in drug delivery (24%), and protein and peptide delivery (9%), which is indicative of the extensive research activities and clinical trials being conducted to evaluate the therapeutic potential of liposomes.
